NEPAD Council and the African Union

A meeting between H.E. Mr. Erastus Mwencha, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union, and NEPAD Council was convened at the African Union mission in Washington, D.C on October 9, 2008 to. Other representatives of the African Union included H.E. Ambassador Amina Salumi Ali, Dr. Elham Mahmoud Ahmed (Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy) and Mr. Moctar Yedaly (Head of Infrastructure and Energy). Dr. Jabulani Dhliwayo (NEPAD Council President) and Dr. Appolinaire Djikeng (former NEPAD Council President) represented the Council while Dr. William Welty (CEO) represented SWANsat Holdings. The main items on the agenda were the SWANsat project and the integration of NEPAD Council into the African Union. Following the meeting, NEPAD Council is going through the process of joining the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC). Dr. William Welty presented the SWANsat broadband satellite projects and its social impact to the African continent. A follow-up summit with potential stake holders will be held at a date to be determined in Addis Ababa. NEPAD Council, SWANsat, AU, African Telecommunication, RASCOM, Lock Heed Martin and IOSTAR Corporation are expected to participate.
 
Africa Peace Centre

The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) – an African non-profit conflict management organization – is currently developing the Africa Peace Centre – a secure, neutral site, where the continent's leaders can forge a passage away from conflict and violence, and towards peace and economic growth. The primary objective of the Africa Peace Centre will be to influence political developments on the continent by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict. The Centre will specialize in conflict management, analysis and prevention and will intervene in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, research and conflict analysis. NEPAD Council has entered an agreement with Accord where NEPAD will help seek financing for the project.

 

SWANSat Project

NEPAD council signed a MOU with SWANSAT Holdings in which the Council will support, promote the SWANSAT project and act as SWANsat liaison to the African Union. When the project is complete in 2015, SWANSAT pledges to offer subsidized broadband satellite bandwidth to Africa at a cost of 1Euro/per month for 2MB/s. SWANsat will also offer each African country and the African Union 200 video channels in exchange for free landing rights. SWANSAT is a constellation of up to twelve telecommunications satellites that will operate the first commercial use of the W-band for delivery of two-way broadband Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services worldwide. Using 500,000 watts of broadcast power, SWANSAT will operate from geosynchronous orbit (GSO) as a hybrid Broadcast Satellite Service (BSS), Mobile Satellite Service (MSS), and Fixed Satellite Service (FSS).
 
ICT Africa 2008
ictafrica ICT Africa is a NEPAD council continental Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) event addressing a wide range of ICT issues in Africa. NEPAD Council’s 2008 ICT Africa event was organized as an integral part of NOVATECH - The ICT Africa Marketplace in collaboration with Pro-Invest. The conference successfully ended on the 15th of February in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Over 300 participants came from more than 40 countries in Africa and abroad to meet and greet, teach, and learn, make connections and move business forward. Dozens of new ideas on ICT development in Africa, business opportunities and lessons learnt from other regions of the world were shared. t. More importantly, NEPAD Council came out of the conference with concrete action items to address some of the most important issues discussed at the conference. Partnerships with other organizations were forged during the conference to facilitate the execution of identified programs. For more details, download the conference report.
 
Europe-Africa Business Summit

Europe-Africa Business Summit 2008 is was first biennial Europe-Africa Business Summit to take place in Europe, organised by private non-governmental bodies it strived to increase European private sector awareness of the many commercial opportunities in Africa. The major theme of the summit was “The State and the Future of the European-African Economic Relationships”. Objectives Coherent with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development objectives (NEPAD), the summit provided a critical assessment of the current state and future of the European – African economic relationships

The next NEPAD Council business summit will be held in 2010 - details will be made available on this site. The first NEPAD Council business event was held in East London, South Africa in 2005.

 
NEPAD Council at GovTech
govtech NEPAD Council participated in the GoveTech event in Durban, South Africa. The 3rd annual South African State Information Technology Agency (SITA) Govtech 2008 Conference provided a high-level, interactive forum for discussion with an audience of over 600 public sector decision-makers actively involved in using information technology to improve public service delivery. The conference consisted of three days of workshops, presentations, case studies, and interactive discussions focusing on collaboration, innovation and citizen-centric service delivery, as well as a cutting-edge ICT Solutions Centre Expo with more than 30 companies showcasing a range of IT products and solutions.
